How does the Spirit work through the Word?

17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Ephesians 6:17 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Ephesians 6:13-18)

13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

12For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Hebrews 4:12-13)

12For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

17That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Timothy 3:17 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (2 Timothy 3:14-17)

14But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Our explanation

Paul calls the Bible "the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Hebrews says: "the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword... and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Scripture was given "That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." The Spirit that inspired the writers now works through what they wrote: correcting, comforting, changing us from the inside.

Our understanding: we do not need a miraculous gift to hear God. When we read His Word with an open heart, His Spirit is speaking. Write a note on a passage that has changed how you think or act.

“How sweet are thy words unto my taste!”

Psalm 119:103
