Does God really exist?

6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Hebrews 11:6 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Hebrews 11:1-6)

1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. 4By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. 5By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Romans 1:20 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Romans 1:18-23)

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:17 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Romans 10:13-17)

13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Think first

Read Hebrews 11:6. It names two things a person who comes to God must believe. What are they?

Show the explanation

Our explanation

Hebrews says that "he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." Believing that God exists is the first step, not the last.

Paul says creation itself speaks: God's "eternal power and Godhead" are "clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made."

Yet knowing there is a higher power is very different from trusting what God has promised. Israel knew God existed, but often did not believe His promises. Where does real faith come from? "Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

That is why these studies go to the Bible itself. Read it with an open mind, and let your faith grow from what you find there.
