How did God give us the Bible?

16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (2 Timothy 3:14-17)

14But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

20Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

2 Peter 1:20-21 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (2 Peter 1:19-21)

19We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

9Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.

Jeremiah 20:9 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Jeremiah 20:7-9)

7O LORD, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me. 8For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the LORD was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily. 9Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.

Think first

Read 2 Peter 1:20-21. According to Peter, where did prophecy not come from, and where did it come from?

Show the explanation

Our explanation

"Inspiration" means God breathing into. Paul writes: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."

Peter explains how: "the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." The writers were carried along by God's Spirit, so their words were God's words.

Sometimes they did not even want to speak. Jeremiah decided to stop, but "his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay."

This is why the Bible is worth reading so carefully: in it, we read God's own mind, written down.
