Whose descendant was Jesus?
12And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

22And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. 23Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:

1Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) 3Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
Our explanation
God promised King David: "I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels... I will be his father, and he shall be my son." Notice the future: "I will be his father." The son was still to come.
The apostles preached that this promise was kept in Jesus: "Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus." Paul says Jesus "was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; and declared to be the Son of God with power... by the resurrection from the dead."
Our understanding: Jesus was a real descendant of David, Abraham and Eve, as the genealogies in Matthew 1 and Luke 3 show. He began his life when he was born of Mary. Before that, he existed in God's plan and promise (Teleios looks at the passages people quote on this).
