41He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

John 1:41 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (John 1:35-42)

35Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; 36And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! 37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? 39He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. 40One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. 42And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

38How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Acts 10:38 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Acts 10:34-43)

34Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. 36The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 37That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judæa, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 39And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Matthew 16:16 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Matthew 16:13-17)

13When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Think first

Read John 1:41. Andrew tells his brother he has found "the Messias." What do you think he expected that person to be?

Show the explanation

Our explanation

"Christ" is not a surname. It is a title. Andrew told his brother, "We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ." Messiah (Hebrew) and Christ (Greek) both mean "the anointed one" (see the word card).

In Israel, kings and priests were anointed with oil when God chose them for their work. Jesus was anointed in a greater way: "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power."

When Peter said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God," he was confessing that Jesus is the King God had promised to send. That confession sits at the center of the gospel.

Word cardΧριστόςChristos

The Greek word translated "Christ." It means "anointed," and translates the Hebrew mashiach, "Messiah" (John 1:41). Kings and priests in Israel were anointed with oil when God chose them. Psalm 2:2 speaks of rulers who stand "against the LORD, and against his anointed." Jesus is the anointed one, chosen and anointed by God "with the Holy Ghost and with power" (Acts 10:38).
