Did Jesus create the world?
15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

12Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
6But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.

6But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; 8And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. 9What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
14And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

Think first
Read Colossians 1:15-18. Which things does Paul list as "created" in Christ? Are they mountains and rivers, or something else?

Our explanation
Paul writes that Jesus is "the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers." Many read this as Jesus creating the universe.
Look at what follows: he is "the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead" (Colossians 1:18). Revelation calls him "the beginning of the creation of God." Jesus is the first of a new creation, the first to rise to immortal life. "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Jesus himself said of Genesis: "from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female." He spoke of God as the Creator.
Our understanding: Colossians 1 describes the new creation in Christ, believers raised to "thrones" and "dominions" in his Kingdom (Revelation 5:10), all made possible through his death and resurrection. Read Colossians 1:12-22 as a whole and notice how often it speaks of reconciliation and the church.
