Did Jesus exist before he was born?

20Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

1 Peter 1:20 · King James Version

18Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

8And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Revelation 13:8 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Revelation 13:7-8)

7And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

17(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

Romans 4:17 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Romans 4:16-18)

16Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, 17(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. 18Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

5Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Jeremiah 1:5 · King James Version
Read the verses around it (Jeremiah 1:4-5)

4Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 5Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Think first

Revelation 13:8 calls Jesus "the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world." When did Jesus actually die?

Our explanation

Peter says Jesus "was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times." Revelation calls him "the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world," yet he died on the cross in the first century.

The Bible often speaks of what God has planned as if it already exists. God "calleth those things which be not as though they were." He told Jeremiah, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee," but no one thinks Jeremiah lived before he was born.

Bible Basics explains: Christ existed from the beginning in God's mind and purpose, and came into existence as a person when he was born of Mary. This is one of the larger questions people bring to the Bible. Weigh these passages with the promises in "Son of David" and "The virgin birth", and see how they fit together.
